Prrroject Hail Meowy - 2026 Halloween Pet Portraits

Each year I try to create a #SPOOKYCAT Halloween portrait of Coco; she dresses up and takes on an alternate purrrsona almost every year.

This year was AMAZE AMAZE AMAZE and she launched her own Project alongside the Hail Mary:

PRRROJECT HAIL MEOWY

We aren’t certain Ryland Grace or Rocky visited the planet Coco did, but it appears to be somewhere in the Tau Ceti or Alpha Centauri systems.

Coco’s Planet (AKA: “Churu”) has vibrant dense oceans of liquid; it’s hypothesized that the dense atmosphere, visible from space, and overall mass, has compressed the planet’s surface gasses into liquid form.  The planet’s gravity indicates there are other substances it is comprised of, so it is not a gas giant.  The presence of Astrophage was detected in the system, with a significant trail leading to / from Coco’s Planet; experimental results testing for a biological presence and possible Astrophage-destroying predator are pending.

Coco is famously food motivated, and though she probably wouldn’t turn down Skittles, she craves Temptations, Churu, seafood, chicken, and just about anything edible.  Prrroject Hail Meowy was filmed for TREATS.

This year’s Halloween portraits of Coco began as a concept several months ago; Project Hail Mary has really been the theme purrrmeating my entire year — I read the book several years ago, just before film plans were announced, so it’s a movie I’d looked forward to for literal years, until it finally came out this Spring, and I went to see it in IMAX *multiple* times — so the theme was obvious, however the exact execution was not.  Much of what I could do would depend on what Coco would allow me to photograph in costume; I did manage to capture all of the angles I wanted, so at that point, this became more of a graphic design project than simple photography like previous years.

I knew I wanted to recreate one of the PHM movie posters, but it took me several weeks to figure out which one or quite how - the “Time Go Fishing - 70mm” poster that I wanted to mimic wasn’t pawsible since Coco’s astronaut costume is front-facing only, so no back angles.  After several weeks of stewing on the direction to take, I landed on combining the leading composition of the “Time Go Fishing - 70mm” poster with the lead-focus of the “Believe in the Hail Mary” poster, and once I found a few graphic assets to get the composition I had in mind, the creative juices started flowing again and I simply had to start being artistic with design elements and polish the details.

I’m actually quite impressed with how well it turned out, and I have to wonder what I could have come up with had I been working with a human model in more intricate costume.  I don’t think I’ll be able to top this Halloween portrait of Coco next year, but who knows.

While I captured a selection of angles / poses of Coco with the Prrroject Hail Meowy cosplay / parody in mind, a few also lent themselves to another idea I wanted to play with: “bad / awkward school / family portraits,” specifically with a starry backdrop.  Cheesy is the point; these inadvertently look like a greeting card design to me, and unironically they really do capture Coco’s purrrsonality: cuddly, playful, and *constantly* thinking about food.  I’m actually really happy with them; they’re maybe a bit less “three wolf moon” and more “two cat stars.”

Woods • Peacock: Headshots and Office Work

Over the years, I’ve captured thousands of headshots for individuals and businesses alike, and while it’s true a great headshot is often your first impression, it’s only one piece of a strong visual brand. To truly market your business, you need a diverse library of imagery that helps clients understand who you are, how you work, and what sets you apart. Authentic photographs of your team in action, your workplace environment, and the day-to-day energy behind your company create a more complete story than a single portrait ever can.

Recently, Woods • Peacock, an architecture firm I’ve photographed for more than a decade through headshots, completed projects, and event coverage, reached out as they prepared for a website redesign. The goal was to expand their visual library with fresh imagery that reflected their people, culture, and the collaborative work happening inside their office. These updated brand images give them versatile content for their new website, marketing materials, and future communications, helping ensure their brand is represented consistently, professionally, and with personality.

Rubin, Madonna, & Abby - Fall Portraits for a Growing Family

It’s been a year since we’ve seen Abby, Donna, and Rubin; Abby is now two, and surprise, she’s soon to be a big sister!

At the peak of this year’s Fall colors, the three gathered at one of their favorite parks and playgrounds to bask in the sunset of 2025’s warm weather.  Abby learned she is is an expert climber, repeatedly traversing the monkey bar archway designed for kids much older than her, and took flight with Rubin tossing her skyward.

Here’s to seeing this family grow in 2026!

Gravelly Point Fall Family Portraits

The expansive greenery and waterfront at Gravelly Point in Arlington, Virginia, provides a picturesque backdrop for portrait photography with its stunning views of the iconic Washington, D.C., skyline.  The proximity to Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport adds a unique and dynamic element to the shots, capturing the energy and movement of planes taking off and landing against the cityscape.

Take a moment to enjoy some recent family portraits I captured this past fall for this family’s Christmas cards, and a small set of senior portraits for their graduating avgeek soon heading off to college.

Baby Amelia - Newborn Lifestyle Portraits

This past October, Mahsa and Peyman welcomed their baby girl Amelia into the world with much excitement!  You’ll remember seeing their late-Summer Maternity Photos last month at a nearby botanical garden.

Newborns, as you followers know, are not my most common photography focus, but I’ve been knowledgeable about the precious genre for quite some time, having assisted a friend in another market with her newborn business and aiding retouching many of her photos; baby Amelia marks my third newborn photography session of my own, and I’m feeling more confident expanding this area of family photography!

For newborns, you typically want to capture them in the first week or two, when they are still flexible from the womb and peacefully sleepy, which are both key for allowing many of the most desired poses.  Due to scheduling, we missed that early window, and captured Amelia at 25 days old - it’s impressive how quickly babies grow muscles!  Amelia is strong, and was managing to unwrap herself and could somewhat propel herself on our set by her feet if you gave her a hand to push against.

We started with a crocheted baby quilt made and gifted by a relative, and captured other variations, and some loving family care time next.  This was also the day after Mahsa’s birthday, so the family celebrated with cake and tea after Mahsa blew out her candles.

Can’t wait to see how quickly little Amelia grows!
